A leading project by: CHEMIE鲁 – The sustainability initiative of the German chemical industry – a cooperation of VCI, BAVC and IGBCE (Germany) – Subcategory: Circularity and Climate neutrality.

The transition to a circular economy is a pivotal challenge in the journey towards a resource-efficient and climate-neutral industry. With the new guideline, “Getting Started with the Circular Economy”, the VCI and Chemie3 would like to offer strategic and operational guidance, especially for SMEs, on a switch to a circular and sustainable economy. It outlines a step-by-step approach and highlights the opportunities that come with early adoption. The guide is available both in German and English. The sustainability initiative Chemie3 carried by BAVC, IGBCE and VCI aims at advancing sustainability in the chemical industry.

Rethinking Resource Use

The high consumption of resources and the pressing issue of climate change necessitate a fundamental rethinking of our economy and society. A key component on the path to climate neutrality is the circular economy, which aims to decouple economic growth from resource use and consumption. This involves converting the raw material base, developing recyclable products, and implementing product-related services such as take-back systems, all of which present new business opportunities for companies.

Strategic Reorientation

To capitalise on these opportunities, a strategic reorientation of the company is required. The shift to a circular economy impacts all operational functions, from the development of new products, through procurement, logistics, production, and sales, to marketing and product-related services. Enhanced networking among companies is also crucial, as circular economy processes extend beyond individual value creation. Early conversion of the business model offers a competitive advantage and ensures the future viability of the company.

Support for SMEs

For small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), the transition from a linear to a circular economy can be particularly challenging. The guideline provides strategic and operational guidance, especially for SMEs, on making the switch to a circular and sustainable economy. Larger companies will also find valuable suggestions for reviewing their current practices and exploring new directions.

Key approaches for a Circular Economy

The guide delves into key approaches to achieve a circular economy, supplemented by case studies from companies:

  • Selection of raw materials for products
  • Design and manufacture of products
  • Packaging and transport of products
  • Own products as enablers of the circular economy for customers
  • End-of-life solutions for products

By developing these guidelines, the VCI is communicating best practices and supporting its members in implementing the Responsible Care programme. These commitments, along with collaboration within the framework of the alliance, stem from signing the Responsible Care Global Charter for associations.
