The MACBETH EU-funded project introduces a revolutionary technology that combines catalytic synthesis with the corresponding separation units in a single highly efficient catalytic membrane reactor (CMR). This new technology which combines the synthesis and separation of chemicals, can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 35% and make resource and energy use up to 70% more efficient. This new type of reactor also reduces investment and operating costs by up to 50% and 80%, respectively, making it a game-changer for the industry.

Building on successful previous projects that included pilot plants operated for highly relevant and large-scale catalytic chemical processes MACBETH has advanced this technology and build the basis to move forward for its commercialization. Now, they are expanding its application to biotechnology, with the development of a demonstration plant for selective enzymatical cleavage of fatty acids, showing the commercial applicability of the CMR.

TRL 6 to 7 demo plants have been build and operated for all application cases within MACBETH.

To ensure this technology benefits various industries, MACBETH has  established a European competence center.  The spin-off company, “MODELTA鈥, has been founded and  offers expert knowledge and commercial services to help industries adopt and benefit from this cutting-edge technology. By achieving these advancements, MACBETH supports the EU’s goal of becoming climate neutral by 2050.

The European project[1] involves 27 partners from 10 countries, including industry leaders from the chemical sector, research organizations, and universities.
